Cooking and Nutrition
Culinary Arts
This course provides the fundamentals and principles of the art and science of cooking as well as occupationally specific opportunities for students to participate in a learning experience that combines classroom instruction with career experiences by preparing meals for teachers at the Bear Bistro. Emphasis is placed on kitchen math, measuring, safety and sanitation, management and production skills, and current health trends in a kitchen setting. Students are also taught employability skills, which include job-specific skills, communication skills, financial and budget activities, and human relations
Band & Show Choir
Beginning Woodwinds
In this class students will either play flute, clarinet, or saxophone. They will learn to perform and create songs on these instruments, how to read music, and how to work as a team to perform as a band. They will get to be a part of the Sylvandale music concerts that will take place during the school year.
Beginning Brass
In this class students will either play trumpet, french horn, trombone, or tuba. They will learn to perform and create songs on these instruments, how to read music, and how to work as a team to perform as a band. They will get to be a part of the Sylvandale music concerts that will take place during the school year.
Advanced Band
This class is for students who already have already had one or more years of beginning band or private music lessons. Seventh graders may audition for the Music Director if they want to be in advanced band. In this class, students will continue to refine their instrumental, music reading, and ensemble skills. They will get to perform in Sylvandale music concerts, as well as at graduation.
Choir
In this class, students will be placed on a specific voice part (soprano, alto, tenor, or baritone) depending on the range of their voices and the needs of the choir. They will learn to read music, to sing songs, and to harmonize with other voices in a variety of musical styles and genres. They will get to be part of the Sylvandale music concerts that will take place during the school year.
Contemporary Music
In this class, students will gain the skills needed to write and perform contemporary or popular music. The focus of the class will be singing and guitar playing, but there will also be units on piano, drums, bass and songwriting. These students will also get to be a part of the Sylvandale music concerts that will take place during the school year.
Visual Arts
Art
General art class is course is to give students a sampling of art projects that emphasize the elements of art (line, form, color, value, texture) and principles of design (balance, variety, harmony, emphasis). Understanding and appreciation of self and others through art history, culture, and heritage is emphasized. A variety of media and techniques create an active learning experience.
Advanced Art
Advanced art gives highly focused students an opportunity to deepen their artistic skills and challenge themselves with more difficult projects. Students have more choice in freedom in the choosing of their project. Students in advanced art are given the opportunity to collaborate on a school mural at the end of the year.
