This is the story of a great partnership between SMS, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the surrounding community. This past year from May 2016 to June 2017, on the third Saturday of every month from 8:30am-9:30am, over 960 people came to the food distribution at SMS for food for their families. The team of 25-30 volunteers distributed 339,855 pounds of food, half of it being fresh fruits and vegetables, all free to the community. In order to make this possible the team donated 1,890 hours of their time and served over 960 people in their community every month.
Tomas and Esther Melendez lead this team of volunteers monthly and spend countless hours helping the community sign up for this distribution. This distribution is not just about free food for families, but rather about taking care of each other. We would like to share our gratitude to the Melendez family and Second Harvest Food Bank for not only being strong partners, but for more importantly helping us respond to the needs of our community.
